The cargo extraction parachute provides the necessary force to extract an air-delivery load from an aircraft. This flat, circular, ring-slot parachute system is used either to initiate the deployment sequence of larger cargo parachutes attached to airdrop loads from the aft ramp of military cargo aircraft, or to serve as a drogue parachute that deploys even larger extraction parachutes for the same purpose.
A summary of the characteristics, capabilities, and features of each equipment size is detailed below:
15 feet cargo extraction parachute: • Designed for Low Velocity Air Drop System (LVADS) of medium-weight cargo • Suitable as an alternate parachute for high-velocity container drops • Used as an extraction parachute with the C-130, C-141, C-5, and C-17 aircraft • Used as a drogue parachute for the C-17 aircraft
22 feet cargo extraction parachute: • Heavy-duty extraction parachute used for cargo airdrop in LVADS operations • Alternate parachute for 26-foot high-velocity parachute • Used with the C-130 and C-141 aircraft
28 feet cargo extraction parachute: • Supports single, double, and triple airdrop configurations • Heavy-duty extraction parachute designed for operational Low Altitude Parachute Extraction System (LAPES) missions • Used in the low altitude parachute system and when is used in clusters of two or three parachutes acts as the main extraction parachute

Extraction line
The size and length of the extraction line used depends on the aircraft used and the size of the cargo extraction parachute rigged for the load.
All parachute assemblies are manufactured, inspected, and qualified in strict accordance with current applicable MIL-DTL-7620, MIL-DTL-9401 and MIL-STD-849.
