The emergency personnel parachute is a high-speed emergency parachute system. This back-type parachute is configured for use in various military aircraft, including the C-5, C-17, C-141, C-130, AC-130, MC-130, KC-135, B-52, F-5, T-37, T-38, A-37, and F-100. This emergency parachute is also utilized by jumpmasters and loadmasters for safety while working in flight.
At altitudes below 14,000 feet, crew members manually pull the ripcord once they are clear of the aircraft. For landing, crew members can steer the parachute to face into the wind, reducing the potential for injury. Upon touchdown, one or both of the canopy release fittings can be activated to prevent the user from being dragged in windy conditions.
